A poet’s work is never done
Before the ink is even dry
Creation has again begun
Demanding that the hour is nigh

Ever constructing some new rhyme
Finding new meaning in old brew
Giving each sentence its due time
Hoping the metaphors ring true

Idolatry, that’s our belief
Jehovah need not fear our psalms
King of all kings, to your relief
Love is the word, our open palms

Must worship words, no other way
Not when you try to touch the heart
Or capture sentences at play
Producing pulp – don’t even start

Queen of all gods, she’s Love, of course
Romance escaping from our pens
She’ll surface somewhere, in due course
Today, tomorrow, we are friends

Utopia, oh, she is swell
Vainglorious, in hubris clothes
Words conquer all, grow in the tell
Xerxes’ ambition, Spartan woes

Yield to the word, write what you know
Zealous belief. And don’t’ tell. Show.
