At best you're average, she stated,  
and then, reverting to the mean,  
before the hurt had been abated,  
not that there was much in between  
the two assertions she delivered,  
her lips untrembling, unquivered,  
she added plus or minus one,  
even before I had begun,  
to state my qualified objection.  
And so -- what now that it's been said,  
the words still ringing in my head,  
is this the worst kind of rejection,  
to be just average and plain?  
Mathematicians won't explain.
