my midlife scene: a field of snow  
the sun is setting it aglow  
it sparkles, flawless and pristine  
as I was, as I might have been  
the choices of so long ago

the drifts, now sugarplums and blow  
the sun, bright lantern for a show  
where I perform, I must be seen  
my midlife scene

but soon the truck comes, with a plough  
its muddy wheels chew up the snow  
no longer pure, no longer clean  
defying my attempts to preen  
still, it is not yet time to go  
my midlife scene
