she looked at me with laughing eyes  
"I love you to the moon and back"  
and then took off into the skies  
a wake of stardust in her track

will you come back, my astronaut  
or will the moon exert its pull  
a silly, but persistent thought  
I cannot help it, I'm a fool

can I compete? chin chiseled gods  
that share the heavens with my bride  
and I, mere mortal, beat the odds  
a tinge of fear mixed in with pride

"I'm back again", she says, a kiss  
I search her eyes, they're warm but sad  
the moon above is what she'll miss  
I settle for what can be had
