Party Time
the hangover serves a reminder
(drink instant today, coffee grinder
impossibly loud
boy, that was some crowd)
and now, I do hope I can find her

January
done with "Merry"
fine now
until Valentine
days so dreary
ordinary
my vow
drowning in my wine
calendar
is unrelenting
for this scar
there's no repenting
every day
another day
what can I say
what can I say
I wake up to an empty room
her keys are on the table
by the window
a cup of coffee
her goodbye note

back in my bow range
I pick an orange
and shoot an arrow
through it's heart
it does take courage
critics disparage
the path is narrow
words depart
create a puzzle
add razzle dazzle
then beg and borrow
that's a start
add rhyme to reason
it is the season
again tomorrow
and stand apart

scanning old sci-fi shows
I look for a hint of it
imagine Kirk and Spock
walking around
staring at their communicators
inventing the future
we fail to predict it

so gentle is the lake's embrace
so loving its reflection
the fog comes in, its languid pace
betraying its affection
the reeds stand absolutely still
the wind is toying with their skill
at last all's ready for the dusk
and on the lake, a scent of musk

oh god, I thought they'd never leave
more than a week, since Christmas Eve
next year, let's do the islands
now, focus on the silence

Taste the sky – fill the Big Dipper
with a scoopful of starlight, and take
a sip. Swirl it over your tongue.
Does it make your lips tingle
with unfulfilled wishes?
Grant one, and let me taste it
with you.
new year, new cause
same as the old boss
calendar empty of meaning
gleaning life's purpose
can't be done at the surface
but the deep has perils
the devil's barrels
ready to roast
you boast you are ready
for what comes next
so steady
until the next test
new year, new cause
same as the old boss
form follows function
hidden energies gather
big fan of Tai Chi

the sigil burned into his shield
glows brightly as they take the field
enemy swords ring as they strike
and a mace punctures with its spike
but as the day comes to a close
and as the wounded wail their woes
he is the one that's loved by fate
and hangs his shield up on their gate

beguiling voice
she fades to black
she made her choice
wish she was back
but she went back
to black
