a bear, barely awake, asked a bee how to be
without money for honey, or magic -- how tragic
the bee, finally free, said a plum, with a aplomb
ask a cat in a hat, she did add, her all that
with these kinds of oaks
we're going to need a bigger squirrel
I doubt, and more than doubt on certain days.
On others, I am grasping at the bible,
and sing His glory with effusive praise,
whenever I am focused on survival.
An easy bargain, trading on belief.
You give me miracle, I grant you power.
Then doubt creeps back, together with relief...
Apparently, God hasn't struck my hour.
Are true believers truly in the know?
Their preachers doubt, but reassure the benches
that faith is not a trade, a quid pro quo,
the kind that soldiers practice in their trenches.
My personal relationship with God?
I struggle, but I sure do wish I had.

sails unfurled, no longer tackled
she will race across the water
the horizon waits, unshackled
calls to her: please come, my daughter
come and meet the morning sun
dance until the day is done

screw entanglement
Schroedinger's cat
evacuates while he can
Does anything have to make sense?
Our runaway bride on the fence.
To the left, total freedom,
to the right: but I need him!
Which way will she go? It depends

a flock of seagulls on the wing
is there a message that they bring
a treasure trove beneath the waves
the flock, for all intents behaves
as though a single, hungry soul
what does it want -- it wants it all
as grasslands stretch across the hills
he takes them in, a gentle trot
the emptiness still gives him chills
out here, the land that time forgot
and yet, he hungers to stay near it
up in the sky, the hawk, his spirit
paradise, encased in plastic
package, crate it, and deliver
bend it as you wish, elastic
get it now, for just a sliver
it says hello and says goodbye
99 cents, a solid buy
pundits ponder their what ifs
high above the moral cliffs
while we struggle not to fall
as they drive us up the wall
my advice is do not climb
turn it off, get back your time
and, I cannot be less vague
best avoid them like the plague
I'm getting all my pennies in a bunch
and going on a trip across the country.
Ensuring that I have enough to munch,
I survey the recesses of my pantry.
Amidst stale cereals and staler cheeses,
I find a lotto ticket, never used.
That Lady Luck, she hands out as she pleases.
I check online, the site says: "prize refused".
The prize -- it would have been a million dollars
but only if I'd brought the ticket in.
I call upon the gentlemanly scholars.
At first I do not know where to begin.
But then I hit upon the winning gambit,
I tell them everyone gets lucky -- once.
Do not rob me, cause I'm no lucky bandit,
or fate itself will look at you askance.
