Poems

in days long gone I used to walk
a mile, or maybe more
I walked to save the quarter fare
to spend it at the store
I'd dig up ancient melodies
in dusty LP covers
get goosebumps at those memories
those unrequited lovers
they sang to me, no pop, their song
accordion and fiddle
I close my eyes and hear the sound
emerging as the needle
punctures the silence of my room
and the turntable's hiss...

and now, the latest in surround
but I do miss that bliss

they shake their heads in angry disbelief
and struggle, groaning, to maintain their stance
their branches, flailing, lose every last leaf
the wailing wind embraces with its dance

a crack of thunder and a giant falls
its horror captured in electric light
gone are its dreams of decking festive halls
and children pointing fingers in delight

as morning comes they are entombed in ice
the wind subsides at last, the sun is out
the forest sparkles, having paid the price
and sends best wishes to the spring's new sprout

me thinks that function follows form
not just the other way around
the two are intricately bound
each has its duties to perform
in fact, it followed form at first
cupping our hands to sate our thirst
those early tools, a rock, a stick
arose before we learned the trick
of shaping nature to our needs
creating forms where none had been
or digging ditches for our seeds
and all that happened in between
the hammer that you hold indeed
perhaps the optimal of shapes
a heavy rock would do the deed
just ask our cousins, the great apes

and so my friend, this contribution:
they're in convergent evolution

I traveled to the Evil Eye
and asked it nicely: lift the curse
but things have simply gotten worse
this I can no longer deny

this morning, when I dropped my toast
it landed on the butter side
I could have stripped it of its hide
this Evil Eye, and made a roast

and yesterday, I hit my knee
when getting up from my own desk
I wished for fates grim and grotesque
on this damned Eye, for all to see

my market moves keep failing still
the thing goes up, and I go down
I've noticed, I'm met with a frown
the Evil Eye must have a shill

persistent is, this Evil Eye
this I can no longer deny
this incantation, writ in verse
perhaps it'll rid me of my curse

It's here at last!  The future swings into the past
The night shall rule no more.  The pendulum,
its score reverses -- the day still nurses but soon
will reign supreme -- now, summer's bane will do its worst,
the fury of a woman scorned, cold, frozen tears as the
celestial gears rotate, love turns to hate and diaries left
behind, then new ones, the same kind, arrive as gifts
under the living, dying tree, and outside, the snow drifts
