Poems

no beating Serendipity
Kate Beckinsale, hot diggity
capricious lovers tempting fate
and fate, so gentle, sends him Kate

I know it well -- the store, I mean
lost count how many times I've been
and as I sit there with my gloves
I think of unrequited loves

sweet taste of buttery pecan
and sipping milkshakes with the one
how lucky do I have to be
fate played its part for you and me

has both pharaohs and caesars
and its share of wizened geezers
Cirque, Le Cirque, I've run full circle
Cosmopolitan is purple

gaudy shows, generous tippers
cheesy bars and gorgeous strippers
table games and one armed bandits
can't be bothered by the pundits

desert has been air conditioned
Bugsy had it all commissioned
ladies of the night are legal
Bugsy did it, Bugsy Siegel

rarely anymore, bodegas
as you've guessed, I'm talking Vegas
modern Oz, take your pink glasses
I can't wait till Covid passes

Author notes: Vegas

a king and queen must mate for life
(unless, of course, a Tudor wife)
such is the chess game of succession
a generational procession

but when it's love that's factored in
then marriages are in between
a truly chemical obsession
and an eventual indiscretion

is there a happy medium
dare to escape the tedium
and do not focus on transgressions
forego "I told you so" confessions

be thankful to the gods above
ecstatic that you wed for love
focus on family and friends
and pray your chess game never ends

let us now dally and converse
we have both means and time
on Babylon, its famous curse
and the preceding crime
(I'm surely not alone in thinking
the tale requires a bit of winking
building a tower to the sky?
to take the gods on? my oh my)

me thinks a simpler explanation
behind the age old curse
more likely it was God's frustration
with poems in free verse
and -- this is hard to counteract
the final straw may be abstract

I'm guessing there are cuneiforms
(although I lack the uniform)
that would confirm my version
of the divine aversion
to claiming something is a poem
from Solomon to Rehoboam
and not to mention Alighieri
unless it's extra-ordinary
it may as well be just a story
and layered up, a tower
and in this divine allegory
you can't have that much power

why don't you take this simple test
read it out loud -- I do not jest
could you remember it, recite
its lines from A to Z?
Like ever? Ever? Then no might
can ban its memory
but if it's adjectives galore
each preening like a metaphor
and rambling sentences, run on
then for the love of God, begone

some languages call it a tongue
and words, they're our dessert
words that are aching to be sung
and though we come from dirt
we build our towers to the sky
it's not for gods to question why
it's not above our station

but pray they have a strong foundation

I saw it there, on MTV
money for nothing, chicks for free
told mom and dad what I had planned:
no college, I will form a band!
I have a friend who plays guitar
I'll play the keyboard, we'll get far!
and for the front, we'll get a girl
a pretty one, hair with a curl

who doesn't want to have a band?
I thought my folks would understand
but though my best friend really played
my best laid plans remained, well, laid
and so I went back to my school
dutiful son plays by the rules

oh, and my friend? to my delight
went on to stardom and Deee-Lite

I find myself pinned to the board
and hardly of my own accord
the label says: species unknown
a dubious distinction

I'm Home Sapiens, I scream
things are not always what they seem
my kind no longer on its throne
and heading for extinction

so why am I pinned like a bug
and to the left of me, a slug
a specimen without a home
and asking for direction

no answer comes, no one will say
no choice for me but hang and stay
as my collector writes a tome
on natural selection
