our minds, a blessing and a curse
susceptible to propaganda
accepting earnestness as candor
and catchy slogans writ in verse
we wish to resonate in kind
and cannot fully comprehend
when others do not understand
why can't they see, they must be blind
our gods, both secular and divine
demand obeisance -- we ought
they say, to criminalize thought
that's not aligned to what they preach
what is the value of free speech
oh yes, you compartmentalize
assign neat buckets to your lies
and feel secure in your own truth
ah, for the certainty of youth
what is the value of free speech?
it's hard to practice what you preach
Author notes: "It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen." —George Orwell, 1984
when life gives you apples
it's time for the school
the teacher that grapples
enforcing their rule
when life gives you cucumbers
perish the thought
assign them to new comers
as if they're bought
when life gives you peppers
do can them -- they're great!
that's what all the preppers
will wish that they ate
when life gives you tomatoes
but skips the potatoes
if you give a hoot
tomato's a fruit!

we recognize our parents in our kids
and resonate with heroes in our books
we gossip about neighbors and our friends
and know that politicians are all crooks
it may be hard to say in rhyme,
this simple truth remains sublime
we're all in the same water all the time

dressed in desire
love returned to the ocean
swims at her own risk

in yearning to say
something truly profound
I struggle and pray
for right words to be found
irrelevance is
what I fear -- no, I dread!
enough with that tease…
I just need to be read

the rhymosaurus went extinct
it just ran out of time
it couldn’t bear to be succinct
enjoyed primordial slime
when they unearthed its hollow bones
some said it was a bird
and other experts of the stones
said don’t you be absurd
it strikes me that the ancient beast
just might have been forlorn
and I suspect, though its deceased
it liked to tout its horn

just how many moons
do you need for a haiku?
man on the moon knows
I'm driven by a strong desire
to say things
that haven't been said before
with variant degrees of success

I met a billionaire once
and asked him for some dough
not not a handout, an advance
my ducks were in a row
I barely heard myself converse
my face and ears aglow
and all I got was a blank verse --
turns out it's who you know

Old Solomon's son, Rehoboam
attempted to rule via poem
his meter and rhyming
had no sense of timing
The Israelites overthrow him

the chords strike true, a star is born
a cosmic blue will now adorn
this place and time, seen from afar
where God sat down, with his guitar
