Poems

Love surely cannot be denied
The drake did whisper to the dove
My bride, please join me in this dance
Chance brought us here, but our romance
Not happenstance

I cannot bear a dragon’s egg
She answered coyly, and besides
Don’t beg, it doesn’t suit your rank
And to be frank, your breath, it stank
Surely you prank

The lovers did not consummate
The dragon cursed his cruel fate
The dove, flew on, both proud and straight

And that’s our story, mate

each generation has its fools
but this one takes the cake
subservient like Orwell's mules
they're blind to what's at stake

contorting words to doublethink
defying Occam's rule
they've brought our nation to the brink
it all started at school

now we must speak as if in church
unholy order, this
and watch them, as they weave and lurch
prohibiting what is

the anger that they do evoke
their ardor -- makes me weep
and if they get their way, the woke
well -- what awaits the sheep?

the gothic spires of Notre Dame
spill gargoyles to the streets below
the hellfire paints them in its glow
stark halos for the newly damned

will Quasimodo’s bell ring true
scorched by the hungry orange flames
it groans as it resists their aims
bronze skirt now takes a reddish hue

an army of old bishop ghosts
stands guard upon the windowsills
their ancient breath preserves and chills
the stained-glass angels and their hosts

and Esmeralda, you’d have guessed
still so defiant and so proud
observes, arms folded, head unbowed
bears witness for the dispossessed
