Poems

professing lust a dozen different ways
I stumble on a sonnet, a bit quaint
but surely suitable -- my lavish praise
knows not of moderation or restraint
you might perhaps assume I'd write an ode
that's only good for worship from afar
my hunger's of a wholly different mode
I long to be inside your boudoir
and not just boudoir, let me be blunt
a sonnet, after all, is just a means
and in my fevered mind I hear you grunt
as need takes over, mixing of the genes
a sonnet of a kind you don't expect
and promise: in the morning, still respect

swift on the wing they're showing off
dive as they scissor through the air
chirping and singing, they face off
this one's a teaser, don't you dare!

and now I'm marked, gee thanks a lot
fly, fly, you bad boy, chirp away
a bit of luck is what I've got
what kind of luck, I can't yet say

swift on the wing they're showing off
and on my face, the biggest smile
chirping and singing, they face off
I think I'll watch them, for a while

I'm not here to pontificate on greed
I tend to think it's rarely a good look
so here's the story of a real deed
perhaps some day it'll make it to a book
back in the day, when we had Y2K
I had to spend my New Year's in New York
the World Trade Center, had to be this way
there was no work life balance, was just work
and so of course we got Dom Perignon
two cases so that everyone could drink
and partied while we worked, to break of dawn
but one case was left over, I do think

that case of course did go down with the Tower
and I did not, and thank a higher power

fearless Achilles, unbeaten in battle
Trojans retreating, their heroes are rattled
Patroclus' death fuels the demigod's rage
it shan't be sated, we're told by the sage
until good Hector does exit the stage

armor invincible, blood of the slain
spilled by Achilles, the grass on the plain
turns red from green as he cuts down the Trojans
Gods of Olympus, so say theologians
even those gods couldn't beat him that day
demigod born but to kill and to slay

Paris shall kill him, of course, in the end
ancient mythology does have this trend
of killing heroes, regardless of skill
even Achilles has weakness -- his heel
so it's Odysseus that gets the credit
for winning the war and for being good at it

And fearless Achilles? Proverbial tale
even the best might be destined to fail
